MP3 walking tours

Andrew found this great list of MP3 and GPS walking tours that range from free to cheap ($5-$20). They all include a map for each city or tourist destination as you’re listening to the tour. I checked out a few of the MP3 tours:

Walki-Talki ($8.99 each) gives a map to follow along with the MP3s. If you dig you can find an audio clip of each tour. After listening to some clips, it just sounds like bad actors reading scripts, if you can get past that part, it seems to have good tidbits of information. It covers United Kingdom, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and The Netherlands. The site also has a thorough how-to install section for those computer challenged. They also offer an iPhone app that comes with photos and a zooming google like map so you can get a better idea where you are.

MPTours ($4.99 – $8.99) has been highly recommended by many travel sites including Lonely Planet. It also offers an audio sample of each tour. It’s full of music, a native speaker like character telling stories from a first person point of view and audio clips from others they “interview”. There are not as many cities, Buenos Aires, Rome, London and San Francisco, but each of those cities have 2-5 different tours. It’s also offered in French and Spanish. If you are in Buenos Aires, they offer a free pre-loaded MP3 player that you can pick up ($10 refundable deposit), or just download the MP3 yourself. This is the least boring of them all, I wish they offered more cities.

TourCaster ($0 – $24.95) has the most cities available, covering most continents and offers not only walking tours, but driving tours, cities guides and free content. This also gives your an audio sample, but it sounds again like regular voice actors reading an obvious script rather than the richness of sounds and imagination that MPTours offers.

Going Away Party

We’re hijacking DJ RA Four’s Tuesday night choons at Murray Street Coffee Shop to say good-bye to our friends before we leave.

Blogging while in Europe update.

Good News!

Previously I wasn’t sure if I would be able to use and put the photos I took with my camera on my iPad, so Andrew and I could post photos as we blogged (besides the ones taken from my iPhone).

My friend, Darren, pointed me to this awesome adapter I had no idea existed: Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit!

For the low price of $30, I can plug my SD card directly into my iPad. There is also a USB port adapter for people who prefer to plug their camera directly into the computer. The iPad and the Camera Connection Kit support standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW.

woohoo!
